CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

Delphi: : The Mother of all Secrets

"Fox, why are we meeting here?" Smitty asked, looking around. There wasn't a house or facility or person in sight. "You said this was an exercise. What kind?"

"The exercise is titled, can you keep a secret?" I said. "It's a group exercise. If one of us talks, we all die." That produced smiles and grins that slowly faded when my expression didn't change. I went on to explain the mission Wallace and Medina proposed.

"When do we leave?" Carl asked, and everyone leaned toward me, awaiting the answer.

"We don't. I refused to take the assignment," I said to disappointed faces.

"Why?" several individuals asked simultaneously.

"Because I love you, idiots," I said, shaking my head in resignation. "We would be announcing that we intended to shut down businesses worth billions of credits and giving our names, specialties, and itinerary." I stopped to let everyone digest that thought. "We would have a multi-million-dollar reward on each of our heads and hundreds of individuals wanting to collect. The only people we could trust would be the Tasmanians."

"That's the only ones we trust now," Isaac said.

"That is not totally true," I said. "You have family and close friends. What would someone be willing to do for twenty-five million credits? An insignificant amount for a group earning billions."

"Has the assignment been shelved, or will they ask other Tasmanians?" Todd asked.

"Realistically, only the Ghost Platoon would have a chance. We have worked together on several assignments and have proven we get results. Wallace now realizes it would be doomed from the start, and he could lose the entire Ghost Platoon. The project is shelved," I said to disappointed faces. "However, my project is potentially on the table."

"What is your project?" Pete asked, and everyone became interested.

"The same but without the press conference." I smiled at all the smiling faces. "The trick is getting into the Shewapu territory without being detected. That will give us a fighting chance."

"Does Wallace or Medina know?" Art asked.

"Wallace may suspect I'm planning something but not what. Remember the old adage; a secret is a secret so long as only one person knows it—"

"Eleven of us are going to know," Smitty protested.

"True, Smitty. I'm trusting that the Ghost Platoon is et anima una on this and understands one slip could result in the death of us all." A long deathly silence followed, then one by one, heads nodded acceptance. "Our task is to come up with a way of leaving Fort Endeavor, getting to Luxor, and entering the Shewapu territory without arousing suspicion."

"Is that all?" Van Lowe snorted.

"We have one trump card. Wallace has agreed to confirm the Tasmanian Committee approved whatever we said it did." I grinned as the eyes lit in understanding.

"I think the first deception is that the committee granted me special leave to visit my father because of an unspecified family emergency. That will mean the rest of the Ghost Platoon can take personal leave time. That should enable each of you to
